The celebrity stylist-loved secret to perfecting hair is a beauty classic: hairspray. Our experts, who work with everyone from Kim Kardashian to KeKe Palmer, agree the best hairsprays help lock in the hair from a.m. to p.m., ensuring you can experiment with creative hairstyles.
Hairsprays sometimes get a bad rep because they can make hair feel crunchy and dry. Thankfully, modern hairsprays help prevent static, frizz, and tame flyaways, making them a must-have when you want a sleek straight or snatched ponytail lewk. They can even help pump up the volume at the roots of those with thin and fine hair.
With more than 4,000 hairsprays on Amazon alone, it's not easy to narrow in on the best hairsprays for your needs, and that's where I come in. As Best Products' beauty editor, I spent several years covering all things hair. So to help you shop smartly, I chatted with two of the most in-demand celebrity hairstylists in the game, Andrew Fitzsimons and Kee Taylor, about what to consider when shopping for hairspray. Our experts also unzipped their pro kits and revealed their all-time favorite hairsprays. The best part? Budget-shoppers rejoice! Everything on this list costs $35 or less.

What to Consider
Hairstyling Goals
Fitzsimons recommends picking a hairspray that is targeted for your hair's needs. He says, "If you want to tame flyaways and give hair a strong hold and a glossy shine, you should opt for a finishing hairspray. If you want your hair to have more volume and texture, you should opt for a texturizing hairspray."
For this guide, we only included one Taylor-approved finishing hairspray (Mizani Lived-In Finishing Spray) because we already have a wealth of hair-texturizing content you can explore, including dry shampoos, products for wavy hair, and hair diffusers to help curls pop, to name a few.
Hold
Taylor notes someone's lifestyle will also help determine the right hairspray hold for their needs.
- Soft-hold hairspray provides a natural look and won't cause any crunchiness.
- Strong-hold hairspray, sometimes called firm-hold, is fantastic for anyone with an active lifestyle or looking for something to truly last an entire day. Taylor says, “If you are constantly on the go, you will most likely need an extremely strong-hold hairspray to ensure your hair doesn’t move an inch.”
- Medium-hold hairspray is the Goldilocks of the hairspray world – sitting happily in the middle, it provides control and movement.
Hair Type
Our experts agree that your giftee’s hair type will also impact the best hairspray for their styling needs. “Definitely consider your hair type, and ensure you know what you will be using your hairspray for. If you have fine or thin hair, look for hairsprays that help to volumize the hair, as this will help give your hair the boost you want. If you have curly or dry hair, look for a hairspray containing more oil-based ingredients, as the oil helps condition and maintain your tresses. If you have color-treated hair, look for hairsprays with color-treated friendly ingredients," explains Taylor.
Application
Before diving into our best hairspray recommendations, I wanted to highlight a simple, but game-changing tip from Taylor and Fitzsimons: It is always best to avoid spritzing on hairspray too close to the hair, so remind your loved one to read the product directions for individual brand guidance on how far away they should hold the can. Otherwise, it can turn your beautiful hairstyle into a sticky, greasy mess.
“When using hairspray I would avoid spraying too close to the hair to avoid buildup, as well as ensuring you don’t spray too much product onto your locks. To get rid of residue, I recommend using a clarifying shampoo or baking soda, which is great for getting rid of product buildup. To use, add a tablespoon of baking soda to your shampoo and spread the mixture on your hair, and leave it on before washing,” advises Taylor. A general rule of thumb she follows is to hold the hairspray can 8 inches away from the scalp to avoid buildup and flaking.
How We Chose
Fitzsimons and Taylor shared their best hairspray recommendations, while I pillaged the Best Products beauty closet to test several products. Together, we can confidently say these are the eight best hairsprays of all-time. Some stand out because they help volumize hair or are designed with color-treated hair in mind. While others caught our attention because some of the biggest names in music and Hollywood love them, but these hairsprays kept our attention because they live up to their promises.
Pros
- Created by a hairstylist
- Banishes frizz and flyaways
- Long-lasting scent technology
- Vegan and cruelty-free formula
- Ulta Beauty Sustainable Packaging Brand
Cons
- Opt for his Strong Hold hairspray if you need something stronger
Of course, I’m obsessed with professional-quality beauty products, but I promise our best overall pick isn’t Fitzsimons’ just because he created and suggested this hairspray.
Touch Soft Hold Hairspray is a fantastic option for beauty newbies and novices alike because it provides a lightweight, flexible hold from a.m. to p.m. It minimizes pesky flyaways and frizz, so you technically don't need an anti-frizz serum. And who doesn't love a streamlined beauty routine, especially in the morning when they're half asleep?!
Although I love that it's free of pesky ingredients that can damage our hair, like SLS, SLES, parabens, and mineral oil, my all-time favorite reason for being obsessed with this hairspray is unique: the brand's proprietary Aurascent Technology. It ensures the hair smells like an enticing blend of citrus, green floral, and creamy woody notes for up to 72 hours.

Now 30% Off
Pros
- Celeb favorite
- Nurtures and strengthens hair
Cons
- Most expensive recommendation
Need proof this is one of the best hairsprays of all damn time? I got you! Celebrity hairstylist Robert Vetica used it on Oscar Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett's hair to create “an effortless chic textured updo.”
After he spritzed on the Better Not Younger No Remorse Heat Protection & Taming Spray and styled sections with a 3/4-inch curling iron, he misted this lightweight hairspray to ensure her stunning braided updo was a textural masterpiece befitting for the Oscars. So yes, if you or a loved one needs flawless red carpet-worthy hair this is undoubtedly the pick.
It's also chockful of impressive ingredients such as biotin and panthenol, plus plant-based roots and extracts to help protect hair health.
And it’s not just celebs who are fans. “These products go above and beyond and what they are said to do... Whenever they are on sale, I buy them and stock up on them cuz I simply can’t use anything else now,” says one 5-star Ulta reviewer who uses the Better Not Younger shampoo, conditioner, and hairspray.

Best for Fighting Humidity
Sebastian Shaper Hairspray
Pros
- Earned the most Amazon reviews
- The scent doesn’t linger long, which is ideal for anyone like me, who hates overly perfumed products
Cons
- The nozzle can sometimes get clogged, so be sure to shake it throughly before each use
Growing up in Florida, I 100% understand the cruel havoc humidity reeks on our hair. So when I noticed pretty much every hairstylist I’ve gone to keeps a bottle of Sebastian hairspray in their salon, I was intrigued.
So what makes it such a classic must-have? Beyond offering a medium-to-strong hold that’s still brushable, it legit blocks humidity and prevents my strands from poofing up, which was the bane of my existence living in Miami.
Plus, it’s compatible with all hair types. I’d know since I relaxed my hair for 15-plus years and have been natural for the last several years, and the hairspray works for both hair types. My mom, who highlights her slightly wavy hair, is also a fan because it doesn’t leave her hair crispy like hairspray in the ’80s and ’90s.

Best for Heat Protection
COLOR WOW Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray
Pros
- Celebrity hairstylist-approved
- Reviewers say it doesn’t leave behind residue
Cons
- Skip if you don’t appreciate a flexible hold hairspray
Did you know Rihanna's hairstylist uses COLOR WOW products on the pop superstar? Thanks to COLOR WOW's hairspray, you can get the star treatment at home without you going over your budget.
This hairspray is a winning choice for pretty much everyone, but those with lighter hair will be impressed that the styling copolymer blend helps prevent brassiness, which is the yellowing of hair. And if they're into heat-styling their tresses with a hair dryer, rotating curling iron, or flat iron. In that case, they need this hairspray in their life because it utilizes hydrolyzed keratin to help prevent breakage.
One Sephora with fine hair is obsessed with using this hairspray daily because it holds their curled strands in place, and adds volume and bounce. “This hairspray does it all without the stickiness,” says their 5-star review.

Best for Frizzy Hair
SexyHair Smooth Smooth & Seal Shine and Anti-Frizz Spray
Pros
- Reviewers say this bottle lasts up to a year
- Great for natural-looking shine
Cons
- Some reviewers say using too much product on their thin hair weighs it down
Your loved one living in (or traveling to) a humid region will appreciate this frizz-fighting hairspray. Not only does it help control flyaways, but it helps seal the hair cuticles so their strands have a beautiful shiny finish. Thanks to a special blend of ingredients, it also helps guard their hair against the sun’s ultraviolet rays that can fade their color-treated ’do.
According to reviewers, this cruelty-free hairspray is safe for all hair types, including chemically straightened hair. The only word of advice we have with this product is to use it sparingly.
“This spray adds a nice shine to my somewhat dull grey hair. It also smooths my hair giving me a sleek look to my bob cut. My only warning is to spray very lightly. It doesn’t take much spray before it goes from sleek to greasy looking,” notes one 5-star review.

Best for All-Day Hold
Pureology Pureology Style + Protect Lock It Down Hairspray 11 oz
Pros
- Enhances color-treated hair
- Provides maximum hold
Cons
- Some reviewers say the nozzle sometimes clogs up
Hairstylists previously told us they love the brand's shampoos, so we knew their hairspray was promising. This hairspray adds a megawatt shine to dull hair and helps protect color-treated tresses from fading quickly.
Knowing how costly salon color treatments are, we can safely say they'll appreciate you gifting a product that helps preserve their hair color. We love that the non-drying formula contains rice starch to soak up excess oil.
Don’t worry, it’s also formulated with olive oil for a touch of moisture to the hair without leaving it a greasy, sticky mess. “Works better than any other hairspray I have tried. I have a lot of allergies, and it does not bother me. Holds great no matter what the weather is,” says one highly satisfied Amazon reviewer.

Pros
- Enhances curls and coils
- Helps redefine second-day curls
Cons
- Skip if they don't appreciate heavily fragranced products
Taylor is a big fan of MIZANI’s hairspray because it’s designed for curly hair. “It does an amazing job at amplifying the texture and hold of your natural curls, while keeping them in place and preventing frizz,” she says.
Online reviewers agree it’s an incredible curl-enhancing spray. To quote one 5-star online review, “My curls still felt lightweight, yet kept their shape all day! It’s almost like a miracle using this brand.”
Other reviewers add they are pleasantly surprised the non-sticky hairspray leaves their tousled hair light and airy. “It holds the hair in place and the best thing about it is that even if you moved a lot the hair is easily manageable. Just run the brush or comb and it will look awesome again,” says one 5-star Ulta review.
Pros
- Alcohol-free
- Smells like aloe
Cons
- Some reviewers say the spray nozzle is lackluster
Rounding out our list is one of Taylor’s favorite hairsprays, which she promises is compatible with all hair types.
“I love that it is formulated without alcohol, which dries out the hair, to ensure that your hair is soft and hydrated while staying sleek,” she says. Taylor, who is based in Los Angeles, adds it’s a fantastic strong-hold hairspray that’s ideal for slick hairstyles or whenever someone wants their style to last an entire night. So if you’re gifting a bride or someone attending a summer wedding, this would be a handy beauty gift for them.
Online reviewers are also keen on Airspray, citing the lightweight feel and ability to brush through their sprayed hair as a major win. Other reviewers appreciate that it provides a long-lasting hold without leaving behind annoying residue.
“The spray was so light and airy [plus, it] didn’t leave my hair sticky. Instead, it made my curls stay in all day. I could actually get my fingers through it,” says one Amazon reviewer.
