Numerical CFD Simulations and Indicated Pressure Measurements on a Sliding Vane Expander for Heat to Power Conversion Applications

Ahmed Kovacevic

Designs, 2019

The paper presents an extensive investigation of a small-scale sliding vane rotary expander operating with R245fa. The key novelty is in an innovative operating layout, which considers a secondary inlet downstream of the conventional inlet port. The additional intake supercharges the expander by increasing the mass of the working fluid in the working chamber during the expansion process; this makes it possible to harvest a greater power output within the same machine. The concept of supercharging is assessed in this paper through numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations which are validated against experimental data, including the mass flow rate and indicated pressure measurements. When operating at 1516 rpm and between pressures of 5.4 bar at the inlet and 3.2 bar at the outlet, the supercharged expander provided a power output of 325 W. The specific power output was equal to 3.25 kW/(kg/s) with a mechanical efficiency of 63.1%. The comparison between internal pressu...

Experimental Validation of a New Modeling for the Design Optimization of a Sliding Vane Rotary Expander Operating in an ORC-Based Power Unit

Davide Di Battista

Energies, 2020

Sliding Rotary Vane Expanders (SVRE) are often employed in Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based power units for Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) in Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) due to their operating flexibility, robustness, and low manufacturing cost. In spite of the interest toward these promising machines, in literature, there is a lack of knowledge referable to the design and the optimization of SVRE: these machines are often rearranged reversing the operational behavior when they operate as compressors, resulting in low efficiencies and difficulty to manage off-design conditions, which are typical in ORC-based power units for WHR in ICE. In this paper, the authors presented a new model of the machine, which, thanks to some specific simplifications, can be used recursively to optimize the design. The model was characterized by a good level of physical representation and also by an acceptable computational time. Despite its simplicity, the model integrated a good capability to reproduc...

Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer within a Rotary Multi-Vane Expander

Sindu Daniarta

Energies

In this paper, the results of numerical investigations on heat transfer in a multi-vane expander (MVE) are reported. MVEs are very interesting for various technological applications because of their advantages (such as, for example, low gas flow capacity and a low expansion ratio). According to a literature study, the heat exchange mechanisms occurring in these machines have not yet undergone in-depth analysis. As a result, there have been very few experimental or modeling results connected to these unquestionably significant processes from both a scientific and practical perspective. Despite the fact that several analytical models have been developed for these phenomena, there is no numerical model dedicated to an MVE. This model was developed by the authors and presented in this paper together with modeling results. Numerical simulations were executed in the ANSYS CFX and focused on defining the expander heat transfer coefficients under various flow circumstances. The results show...

This paper presents the performance study of a new designed rotating sleeve vane (RSV) compressor. The aim of this study was to develop a more compact semi-hermetic refrigerant compressor for refrigeration and airconditioning systems, which will improve the conventional design in terms of sizing and operating mechanism. Experimental study was carried out on the prototype of a single and multi-vane (three and five-vane) RSV compressor prototypes with identical size of rotor and sleeve and tested the in a test bench of R134a refrigeration system. Each test was carried out in a steady state of refrigeration thermodynamic cycle at operating speed varied between 1000 rpm to 1500 rpm to obtain the mechanical and volumetric efficiencies. The experimental results on the three of the new prototypes were analyzed and found that that the single vane compressor prototype has a similar volumetric efficiency of about 90% with that of rolling piston compressor of equivalent capacity. A double increment in capacity to about 48 cc was observed in the five vane prototype models with the same overall dimension and configuration of the rotating components to that of the single vane. The volumetric efficiency was also comparable of about 70% to an existing multi vane rotary compressor.

Every year, Indonesia's population increase so as energy demand. To fulfill Indonesia's energy needs, the capacity of energy production should be increased. Indonesia government has made a solution by propose 35.000 MW program to increase energy production and electrification ratio in Indonesia. An insulated area where electricity did not reach, has many problem to get electricity such as limited infrastructure, low fuel energy content, and expensive turbine. To solve these problem, multi-vane expander (MVE) can be used to extract the low energy and is cheap. MVE have many advantages such as cheap, easy to manufacture, able to operate with 2 phase, and able to low speed operation. But, the disadvantage of this type of expander is leakage. In this paper, experimental and CFD analysis of MVE are conducted. The experiment generated power of 25.7 watt with isentropic and volumetric efficiency of 11.6% and 11.7% by using operating condition of 1.5 bar, 115.6 oC, 626 rpm, and mass flow rate of 80 kg/h. The CFD model of the expander is created with the same dimension and operating conditions as experimental. The result for isentropic efficiency is inversely proportional with mass flow rate and for volumetric efficiency, power, and expander rotation are directly proportional with mass flow rate.

On the optimal design of sliding rotary vane pump for heavy-duty engine cooling systems

Davide Di Battista

E3S Web of Conferences, 2021

Presently the on-the-road transportation sector is responsible of the 21% of the whole CO2 amount emitted into atmosphere. This pushes the International Governments and Organizations to provide strict limitations in terms of ICEs emissions, also introducing fees payment for the car manufacturers. The vehicle electrification allows certainly to meet these requirements, but the higher cost and the need of a green electricity still limit a widespread diffusion among all social classes. Thus, the technological improvement of internal combustion engine plays a key role in the transition period. Among these technologies, the engine thermal management allows to achieve a good compromise between the CO2 emission reduction and related costs. It was demonstrated that replacing the conventional centrifugal pump of engine cooling system with a sliding vane rotary pump (SVRP), important benefits in terms of CO2 emission reduction can be achieved as centrifugal pump efficiency decreases significa...
