Description

Specialties

U-Haul is the choice for truck, trailer, cargo van rentals and U-Box containers; most offer self-storage, boxes, moving supplies, hitch installations & sales, propane & online reservations.

History

Established in 1945.

Since 1945, U-Haul has been serving do-it-yourself movers and their households. Like many other successful ventures, the concept for U-Haul was generated out of need. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. U-Haul co-founders L.S. «Sam» Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized that need and acted upon it. Their visionary approach spread the cost of ownership among many users, facilitating the mobility of the populations of the U.S. and Canada. The covered wagon of the pioneers morphed into orange U-Haul trailers.

Called to reserve truck for a sunday at 9am. Got there at 8:58am got my truck by 9am :)
Had it booked til 3pm but moving took longer so we got it back at 4pm… lady was super nice and no extra charge.
All the bad reviews terrified me but I could not dish out $ 900+ to hire Professional movers so this was a great option.

Awful! Awful awful! Disappointed. Digusted!
I’ve been going there for years with my family. Done! Never again! I never write bad reviews. But bad customer service is shocking to me. People have to know.

No parking. Unfortunately I went there today to pick up two boxes for plates and dishes for moving. I parked in a spot where I wasn’t blocking anyone or anything. A gentlemen that worked there told me to move or to park in a handicap spot. There were no spots including the handicap spots and I wouldn’t park there as that is illegal and someone might need it. I vocalized that politely and the gentlemen told me, «whatever I don’t care where you park.» I tried to explain I was only getting two boxes and then he told me he didn’t care. I politely said I will be going somewhere else to purchase boxes. He continued to tell me he didn’t care. Later in the afternoon my husband and I went back and nobody greeted us in the store or helped us. It was as if we were an inconvenience to them. They might have what you need but the experience isn’t worth it.

Wish there were negative rating numbers I would give this U-Haul on 801 Harlem a –10! I paid cash and they charged my card any way which holds money on my account over $ 100.00 tied up because of this U-Haul then I call and they disconnect me 2 times!!! Then they say they will call right back but been over 1hr and no call!!! I need to move something else this week but won’t use this U-Haul or probably any U-Haul. Hope giving them a negative review will shape them up.

I wish I could give them less than 1 star. And I wish I had looked at the other negative reviews before trying to use this Uhaul location because it’s obvious they have a long history of hiring imbeciles.
They will NEVER waste my time or money again, and this is why:
A month in advance I reserved a 14′ truck and the email said I’d get a call the day before to confirm my pickup time and location.
The day before and it’s 3:30, so I call them because I’m starting to get a bad feeling that I’ve been forgotten about. The first person can’t figure out where my truck is, promises to call me back in a few minutes. 30 minutes later another girl calls me back who, honestly is *super nice* and really polite and I believe that she really tried as hard as she could to find me a truck. There just wasn’t one where it was supposed to be. Finally, I have a truck reserved in Alsip, IL45 minutes away from where I live. Awesome (sarcasm).
«Oh your reservation must have been hiding.» My reservation is not a kid in the clothing racks at a department store. It is not a cat under a bed. It is an automatically generated email alert that should print out and tell you to call me ASAP the day before my reservation because I took the time to think about this a month ago.

This place is ridiculous. I have been there 2 times and still haven’t been helped. All I need is my tow hitch wiring installed correctly and get my towing inspection. I was scheduled a few days ago, which I went only to be told that the wiring tech wasn’t there. So why was an appointment made? Or if there was a last minute call-off they should have advised me to come another day. I have called and called probably about 15 times now and every time I get transferred to customer service only to get the runaround all over again. From reading the other reviews I can see Ilene the manager isn’t cutting it.

This is the worst service I have ever been given and honestly they don’t even deserve to be in business.
Made an appointment to get a hitch installed, and they called one hour before the appointment to tell me the tech was not in and they needed to cancel. Also, that they couldn’t see me for another 2 days and that it would take about and hour or so.
The day I get there, they tell me it’s going to take 3 hours to install. 3 hours!!! When I asked if someone could at least take me to the mall down the road, I get a response of «you can walk». How rude!
After 3 hours of waiting they tell me it’s going to take another hour. Are you kidding me? 4 hours to install a stinking hitch?
I will never come back to this place or recommend anyone to go here and have to deal with this nonsense.

Absolutely terrible service. I had reserved a 14′ truck one month in advance for a 9 AM pickup. The day before I was scheduled to pick up, they called and told me they only had one truck available and it wasn’t until 3:30 PM. The person on the phone proceeded to say there was nothing they could do and told me to call customer service before hanging up. Really? The only way they stay in business must be the U-Haul name.

Location, location. This is in a good location. It is right on the I-290 Harlem Ave exit.
This is probably why it is so busy. I have never been to a rental facility with so much volume. I was told by the representative that the place is even open on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Unlike many locations, this one is open pretty late almost every day of the week and it is well stocked with all types of moving supplies.
My friend needed to rent a van for small items things she has kept in storage for a short time. The rental cost is very cheap but the mileage is the big ticket item. It costs $ 1.09 per mile which is pricey in my book.
The representative was not overly nice but she was pleasant and knowledgeable.
Getting in the driveway is a challenge if you are coming from 290. The location sits on a corner which has high traffic so it is near impossible to turn into the driveway if you are entering the side street from Harlem. You have to make the block and come back. People who tried to turn without making the block almost caused an accident each time.

Not for the faint of heart!
I called to get an estimate for a 2″ hitch. They «require» a name and telephone # before they will even give you an estimate. Then they wanted additional information, which I declined to give. Instead of moving on, they tried to pressure me into giving them more info. Once we finally got past that, they gave me an estimate. Without skipping a beat they asked for my credit card number to reserve a spot for the appointment. I told her again that I was only looking for an estimate, that their price was higher than a competitor and that I would not be getting a hitch from them. Acting as if she didn’t hear a word I had just said, she asked again for my credit card info. This is a HARD SELL sort of place and they don’t want to take no for an answer. Would not recommend to anyone…

Hi I booked a trailer online and expected to get it at this location. I had read bad reviews about the experience and kept in touch with the location. I’ve learned that it is better to get the reservation AT the location you are going to pick up because Uhaul corporate assigns the gigs and THAT system is screwed up. Talk to the manager if you can, they have authority to be helpful!
Short story, the hitch I ordered wasn’t delivered in time and I asked about switching to a truck and car tow at last minute. Ilene Mertes, the general manager was able to help me set everything up and gave me a break on the price so it was not much more than I had already expected to pay. If you are considering a move with UHaul, talk to Ilene first!
4 stars because the Uhaul online system doesn’t give access to the real location.

Grr. Had them put a hitch a few years back. It started making noise almost immediately, but my BF at the time decided that a shim would be fine to cushion where it rubbed on the muffler.
That actually lasted for 2 more years, longer than the relationship… but then I decided to *actually* get it fixed and went back as I had a lifetime warantee on it (from what they told me when I went in this past time!)
Anyhow, they put it up, looked at it, and said the hitch wasn’t touching anything and it was my muffler. Drat, off to the muffler place. Who put the car up and found the muffler was FINE and the HITCH WAS RUBBING obviously. they showed me exactly where and fixed it up for me.
Uhaul had installed a hitch that did not belong on my car, and that was the problem the whole time.
booo.

I signed up for the new UHaul UBox storage service and even though I was in Lincoln Square this was the location they sent me to, because it was the nearest one that supported UBox. Lo and behold I was actually their first UBox customer. Sure, it took some time for them to get everything straightened out, but come on, I was their first customer of this kind. Martin (I think one of the managers) was excellent through the whole process. He ended up being the driver who brought the unit to my original location and drove it to my dropoff location.
The UBox experience was great, and my friends who were helping me move appreciated it too. Loading up the unit took about a half hour when I moved out, and a month later, unloading took about the same for moving my stuff in to the new place. The bonus is there was no unload into a storage unit after moving out and no loading up a truck before moving in.
Sure, it costs a bit extra but still far, far better than paying movers.
I would highly recommend this service, and if they point you to this location, do not be deterred by their previous low ratings.
Martin and the entire team were very good to me.
Your friends will apprecite it too.

I returned a truck here that I had rented in Michigan. The next day I wake up to a $ 120 dollar charge on the card I had used to rent the truck in Michigan. Furious, I called them and asked why they saw fit to charge me nearly 100% over again of the original cost of the rental.
The guy on the phone told me it was because I had returned the truck with only 18 of a tank of gas. This was, of course, completely untrue as I had filled the tank just prior to dropping it off, as per the rental agreement. Finally after visually inspecting it himself he begrudgingly refunded my money (minus 14 dollars since he claimed it was merely at «15÷16» of a tank… what the hell??).
The $ 120 charge is still sitting on my card 4 days later, no reversal. I don’t expect happy and attentive customer service from underemployed rocket scientists but is it too much to ask for a basic level of competency, courtesy, and perhaps a brief double checking of your information before you start going willy-nilly charging people’s credit cards?

I’ve had to use this company several times, and each time was quite favorable. Moving is a horrible experience in and of itself, so the last thing you need is a bad experience with the truck rental company.
Martin, the general manager, is a doll! He makes you laugh (even if he’s in a bad mood) and makes sure that your reservation is confirmed (can’t tell you how many times I’ve had other places make a «reservation» with my credit card, only to get to the place and find out all the trucks were gone!), and will even help you should you need packing supplies. Even though I always ran late (picking up & dropping off the truck), as long as I called Martin, he was great about it (no late fees, hidden fees, etc.).
The only problem I have with this place is the location & the parking lot. The parking lot should be bigger and it’s in a horrible location (right near the West and East entrances/exits of I-290 off of Harlem Avenue). Other than that, the place is great and I highly recommend it.

Customer service and communication at this place is terrible. I reserved my truck 2 weeks in advance. I got a call the next day giving me my pickup and return time which in no way worked out for me.
I spoke to the lady that was working, who was extremely rudy by the way, and explained my situation to her. Basically I needed the truck overnight for move in early the next morning, before they were even open. She got me a larger truck and changed the times for my pickup to keep overnight. I called the store on the day of my pickup to confirm the reservation and to check on parking. Turns out the new pickup time was never changed and no– they didn’t have any other trucks that weren’t already reserved.
I’m sorry, so let me read between the lines: we-screwed-up-the-order-it’s-not-my-fault-I-have-no-more-trucks-I-can’t-do-anything-about-it-and-I-won’t-try.
Being the glutton for punishment, I called another nearby store where the manager was willing to actually help me and said he would address the cancellation fee of $ 50 with the manager of the U-Haul Expressway store. I’ll let you know how this one turns out, it is the U-Haul in Broadway.

How do they stay in business? Only 1 Star rating? So many reasons why this business is terrible.
No parking, hard to get into crappy lot with even crappier rental equipment. Disgusting customer service. And we later found, over priced from other U-Haul dealers.
We also found out that the «competition» down the street, is actually owned by the same people! So, how is this fair competition? Sounds like another scam corporation to me.
Stay away from this one in particular. It seems from other reviews, they are all pretty bad, but this one is extra bad.
Go Ryder.

This place doesn’t even deserve one star. The only person who knows what she’s doing is the manager, and she’s about as friendly as a pitbull with an earache. Even she admitted to my face that her employees were idiots.
I called a month in advance to reserve a storage unit and told the guy on the phone that I have a queen sized bed, a full-sized futon, and other furniture to store for two months, and he told me that a 5’x8’ would be plenty of room. I asked him three times if he was sure, and he said yes. Well, I should have gone with my gut because it wasn’t big enough AT ALL. We had to upgrade to an 8’x10’ space THE NEXT DAY because their office closed at 5:00 on the dot and even though there was still someone behind the counter, they had locked the doors and wouldn’t open them even though we had just been in there. When we did finally get the new space, the ceiling was very low and had nails sticking out of it. The door was tiny, barely 6′ tall, so we had a hell of a time fitting the bed and box spring in.
The location itself is all but impossible to get into with only one incredibly inconveniently placed driveway in front of the office that is blocked all the time with cars and Uhaul trucks. When we had to move units, there was no attendant on duty in the storage area to help us find the new unit so we had to wander around until we located it ourselves. Also, the first night we tried to store things and couldn’t because of the small unit, there appeared to be something of a chop-shop operation going on in the storage area, operated by one of the employees. It might have been some sort of side business as an auto repair place, but it looked really shady to me.
The only good thing about this place is that the manager was very accommodating with changing our unit from a 5’x8’ to an 8’x10’. Otherwise, this experience was a confusing, frustrating nightmare and I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy. Stay away.
